Various diagnostic tests are available in medicine for the diagnosis of different ailments of the body. ‘Blood sugar’ testing for diabetes, X ray for chest infections, MRI and Ct scan for soft tissue imaging etc. these tests help in diagnosing different ailments of the body. Similarly for the diagnosis of skin disorders, skin biopsy is the best tool. It allows microscopic examination of the tissues under high resolution. This aids in histopathological diagnosis of the disorder. Thus skin biopsy is considered ‘Gold Standard’ in diagnosing the various ailments of the skin.

WHAT IS SKIN BIOPSY

The tissue sample received is cut out in thin sections for examination. These are mounted on a glass slide, and viewed under a microscope under high resolution. The details of the skin layers, the appendages, inflammatory cells, blood vessel microanatomy etc. are noted. This helps in establishing a definitive diagnosis, when in clinical doubt.

PROCEDURE

Informed consent is obtained from the patient after ruling out any contraindications. The lesion to be biopsied is identified by the skin expert. It is cleaned with betadine and spirit gauge. Using a sterile 3mm punch, a piece of tissue is extracted and transferred into formalin containing vial. The site is then bandaged, sutures applied if necessary. Details of the patient are filled and sample is sent for testing and analysis.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT CANDIDATE

Patient presenting with any skin ailment that requires microscopic examination for confirmation such as

• Psoriasis
• Lichen planus
• Vasculitis
• Premalignant/malignant conditions of the skin

Is a right candidate for biopsy. Whenever the clinician is in doubt, and a definitive diagnosis needs to be established, skin biopsy is warranted.

• Active infection at biopsy site
• Keloidal tendency
• Bleeding disorders
