ACNE

Acne also called as pimples/zits, is an inflammatory condition of the oil glands of the skin. The oil (sebaceous) glands get blocked due to excessive oil and keratin plug formation. These glands get infected by the bacteria called as P. Acnes, which releases chemical substances and causes state of inflammation locally giving rise to redness of the skin and pustule formation. Different individuals manifest different type of skin lesions. Blackheads/whiteheads, red papules, pustular lesions, infected nodular lesions etc all may occur in acne patients depending on the severity. It commonly affects the face, back, upper chest and upper arms.

What causes acne?
Acne starts in teenage years when the levels of the sex hormones begin to rise. These hormones act on the oil glands to stimulate it and thus give rise to acne lesions. Patients of acne in general tend to have oily skin on the face. Apart from this, consumption of dairy products, food with high glycemic index ( sweets, chocolates etc) in excess may also trigger the condition.
